Sitting watching a DVD when the light flickered briefly and went out. A few seconds later smoke began rising out of the top of the lampshade. I quickly turned of the power and removed the lampshade to see that the base of the bulb was glowing red. Good thing I was there to avoid a possible fire. I plan to take the bulb back to the store where I bought it with a copy of this blog... to warn them they are selling a fire hazard. Feit should recall these light bulbs and take immediate action to STOP MANUFACTURE of this potential killer.

Feit bulbs have to be the absolute worst CFL's available. ALL die a premature death, and the latest filled my family room with an "about to start flames" smell. When I figured out what the problem was, the plastic base was charred, too hot to touch, and the glass tube was glowing orange at the base.

How these bulbs passed UL and how the Consumer Product Safety Commission allows these to be sold is beyond me.

It SEEMS, but I have no data to prove this, that the "major" brands fare somewhat better.

Bring on the LED's! At least their heat is much less (but what will be THEIR failure mode?)

After reading numerous complaints, I am convinced that there is a serious issue with this light bulb. All I can say is thank God I was awake and watching TV when then light bulb starting flickering and then started smoking filling my house with an acrid smell akin to burning plastic. The thought of what could have potentially happened scares me to death and I intend to follow-up with the company directly. This is a tremendous health and safety hazard. I want to do my part to save the planet but not at the ultimate cost of my family's lives. I will never use these bulbs again.

Having had two of these catch fire, I've called the company and returned the first one. I've kept the 2nd, as FEIT is lying about the "1% problem rate"; everyone who has these more than six months has problems. Don't send them in, as then your evidence is gone. I gave one to our homeowner's insurance agent, who said he'd turn it over to their lab for examination. I've called FEIT and been ignored, as they're still (after over three years!) blaming these problems on incorrect installation, bad lamps, etc.

Pull them NOW, or come home to find a pile of ashes where your home once stood, as these seem to all eventually burn UP, not just burn out. They do smoke, melt the ballast housing and can do worse, as they don't cool down quickly after being turned off either.

Never had any trouble with Sylvania or GE bulbs, so that's what we're using now.

I also had a bulb start to smoke, turn brown, and start to melt at the base. The fire department came out and said we were lucky it didn't start a fire. I contacted Feit's customer service, and they tried to sweep the problem under the rug, took no responsibility, and tried to convince me that this is "normal" before the bulbs burn out. I contacted the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and a federal investigator came to my house and took the bulbs for testing. She gave me permission to post her name and contact information and wants to get reports from you too. Kathy Bellenfant kbellenfant@cpsc.gov.

Must give this the lowest possible rating as it almost started a fire. Luckily I was close by when it started smoking badly. Even after letting it cool for several minutes, it was still very hot at the base. I reported this to Consumer Products Safety Commission - would recommend others to do that same that have had this experience:

Within 6 months, 3 of the 18W (75w Equiv) CFLs have blown. One which gave off a nice show of smoke and some sparks. Non-covered, in a/c conditioned room. Not saving money or energy with these things. Purchased at Costco.

Called company and was assured that this was not common and was expected if the bulb was damaged in transit. Offered to replace the bulbs at no cost (or shipping)

Like many of the other people writing reviews of this product my bulb also began to burn -- where one end of the fluorescent tube went into the base. Fortunately we were home and were alerted by the burning smell. I cannot believe with the large number of similar experiences noted on this site and the potential for loss of life and property that there has not been a recall issued on this product. This is unacceptable! I have removed all bulbs from this manufacturer from my home and will never puchase this brand again.

January 30, 2010,

In my bedroom, lights on, when one of the CFL's (purchased at Costco)started buzzing and flickering, then went dim. Moments later I heard more buzzing and looked up to see a bright orange glow at the base of the bulb and a 2" stream of acrid smelling smoke going up!

Fire Dept came out and saw it, said they had never heard of this. The F.D. called me back after googling the model#BPCE23TM/4 and gave me this site, said to take them out! (Not in a 3way,dimmer or enclosed fixture)!

These bulbs should be recalled!!

Hello
In less than 30 days, I have had four of these do the same thing. The base of the tubes melted, fried and filled the house with a terrible smell. The cieling was scorched and very warm.

Wow! how many more have fry before a statement gets issued. Does this happen to other models or shall we wait until a whole family is lost by one of these obviously defective bulbs.

48 Feit Electric Conserv-Energy CFL Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs purchased from Costco.

Label on light bulb base:
BPCE23TM/4
23W 120VAC 60Hz 380mA
UL # E170906

Bulb was in upright Ikea floor lamp which was not enclosed. Base of bulbs melted black and burned. Acrid smoke filled our house while light bulb was still on. This is the second bulb that has burned within 1 year of purchase. Luckily we were home both times and smelled the smoke before it got worse.

The box says: "Lasts up to 9 years" LOL...less than 1 year for us.
And the bulbs are UL approved.

And it takes a long time to get rid of the smoke and smell.

This bulb was purchased at Costco in the Summer of 2009. Today, 11/06/2009, the bulb smoked and burned when switched on. It is a safety hazard. We will never have a product by this manufacturer in our house ever again. The bulb is a fire hazard and should not be offered for sale. Outside of burning, the bulb appears normal. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has been notified, along with UL who certified the bulb under # 170906. This particular bulb has an extraordinary short life and a terrible safety record.

Thank God for the internet, same story at our house, bulb hissed then started smoking with bad burning smell. Lucky wife was home and turned off light. Simply entered model number in Google and wouldn't you know it, up pops a long list of folks whom have same experence. I must have 20 of these bulbs in my house/shop/garage. Plan on removing them all and taking them back to Costco, have a little question for Costco manager. Why haven't they provided us notice these things could easily burn our house down. I expect the defect is limited to the company Feit Electric but will look for more info of these types of bulbs. This was scary.

I also purchased these bulbs from Costco. One of them burned out long before I thought it should have, so I investigated the package, which directed me to a Web site for complaints. Google could not find the Web site.

On this site (One Billion Bulbs), however, I read enough stories about flames and noxious fumes from CFL's sold by this company to prompt me to remove all bulbs sold by this company from service in my home. I have also alerted COSTCO.

Below is a letter I sent to the bulb manufacturer on Auguat 12th and their response. Everyone who has had the experience of their bulbs burning should file a complaint with the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the manufacturer. Maybe some action will be taken.

I purchased a number of your CFL's from Costco a couple of years ago. Yesterday one of the bulbs (BPCE23TM/4) installed in a ceiling fixture started hissing and smoking. When I removed the bulb the base where the glass is attached was burnt and melted. I have contacted the the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and filed a complaint. I have read on-line that many other people have experienced the same problem with your products. They are a safety hazard and should be recalled before someone is harmed - if that hasn't already happened

Dear Consumer,

Thank you for contacting us with your concerns regarding one of our products. I am the Customer Service Manager here at Feit Electric. I would like to handle this issue personally since this is a rare occurrence. I am very interested in speaking to you and determine exactly which light bulb this could be as I mentioned in the initial email our defective rate is 1% in over 60 different types of compact fluorescent light bulbs.

I would more than happy to send you replacement light bulbs and assure you that what you experienced with the initial set of light bulbs is a rare occurrence with any of the light bulbs that we manufacture and they are all long life quality light bulbs.

If you would provide me with your contact information and when it is convenient for you I would be happy to contact you directly.

I look forward to hearing from you

Best regards,

Maria L. Preciado

As others have described, one of these bulbs burned out, almost caught fire and filled the house with a burning electric/plastic smell. On top, since we've been using these, many other bulbs have burned out quickly lasting no longer than regular bulbs.

I'm removing all these stupid curly-cue bulbs and going back to regular bulbs. The curly-cues are expensive, unreliable and apparently dangerous. On top of that they contain mercury and no one I know bothers to recycle them. They just throw them in the trash and the mercury apparently ends up in the garbage dump. You've got to wonder how that's going to work out with thousands of people doing this.

Son noticed ceiling fixture glowing red but not coming on. He took off cover and smelled strong burning odor. The glass tube was broken near the base. The buld was blackened and the base was black, melted and not solid to the touch. Being in a ceiling fixture it was lucky it didn't start a fire!

If these weren't recalled they clearly aught to be! From the other remarks this wasn't an isolated insedent. They are a hazard!

Light burned out, not on dimmer, not on 3-way. In bathroom above sink with only two used in a four-hole light holder. Saw smoke coming out of base. The light started making crackling sound. Smoke got worse as if going into flame. Turned off light and removed. Will be returning to original purchaser with a gigantic complaint. I have a big house and four people living here. Into fire mode and it might have been disastrous. This happened on the second story.

I just had a "Conserv-energy" BPCE23TM/4 23W UL# E170906 nearly catch fire in a ceiling fixture. In response to all the other reviews the company can be found at www.feit.com/

We had a similar experience with this 23W bulb: UL#170906 BPCE23TM/4.
Last night we called the fire department, and they discovered the "failed" bulb. It was installed in a floor lamp with a cloth lampshade. There was a noxious odor of burning plastic/electrical components, and the room was filled with a smoky haze. The casing is blackened and cracked at the base of one of the glass coils. We feel lucky that we did not have a fire. Today the smell is still strong, and has given me a headache. I am worried that some of the mercury vapors may have escaped into the air. I called the city's Fire Investigation Department, but they were not able to give me any information. I'm going to call the local EPA office. I AM PLANNING TO STOP USING THESE BULBS.
Thanks for identifying the manufacturer; I can't believe their ID is not printed on their product! I think we bought this from Home Depot, not sure how long ago.

Bought these bulbs at Costco and have used them for a while. The other day, I came home and smelled something burning like a wire burning. Checked all my outlets and when I checked my lamps, one of these bults were turning brown on the bottom of the bulb and melting. I would not recommend these bulbs to anyone. Feit Electronics should be investigated by the Better Business Bureau.

These lights seem to work pretty well for a while (3 to 5 months)but then they start to smell like they are burning. I just removed my third one for that reason. The first one was actually on fire...it was arcing and smoking and flames were just starting when my wife turned off the light. Fortunately the flames quit when the light was turned off. If we hadn't been home when it started to burn, we probably would have lost our house and it's contents. I would like to get an address, phone number or something so I can contact the manufacturer and inform them of this problem before someone does lose a house.

Bulb burned out prematurely. Even after the bulb died, the base of the lamp continued to generate heat and a foul odder.
Would think twice before I buy this brand again!

I just got online to find out how to get a new bulb after buying this at Costco and it burning out with minimal use in 6 months. These bulbs sound like a fire hazard! I will no longer buy light bulbs from Costco. This company is impossible to find on the internet, and only because of this forum do I know to look for Feit Electronics. This company is not printed on their bulbs.

Well, I've had a few of these CFLs burn out, and this time I wanted to be more scientific about it and look up the part number on the net. Wow, glad I did. The one I had fail today sounds like some of the others, with blackened area around base of where a tube goes into the CFL body. We just noticed it would not turn on, we heard nothing and smelled nothing. The bulb was in a totally exposed socket (not enclosed fixture) mounted sideways, not on dimmer or three way switch. The specification above indicates this is to be used for "table lamp" applications. Perhaps the orientation should be vertical instead of sideways with these. If so, WHY NOT have a this side up arrow, etc?

2 year warranty?! I think it worked 6 months. No, I don't have my reciept. Mailing it back to Feit Electric or whoever they are would surely cost more than getting another one. Just found some dimmable CFLs the other day, maybe they will be more dependable in non-dimming applications.

I'll be watching for the model number bulb and products by Fiet Electric, and making sure I never get any of them or their stuff again.

Stay away from these bulbs - they are a fire hazard and are prone to cracking then literally burning in the fixture. Lucky for me I was in the room when the defect presented itself, or my house most assuredly would have burned.

Additionally the market these bulbs as being "green" friendly - but how could that possibly be if the bulb itself contains mercury?

This bulb burned out prematurely. It smelled terrible, and produced a black gooey residue at the base of where one of the tubes enters the body. It appears as though the tube is cracked. This malp was used in a bathroom light fixture above the sink, along with another one (which still works). This bulb did not even come close to the anticipated life expectancy that was advertised. TThe base says that this bulb contains mercury. Considering that the glass is cracked, do we now have amercury hazard in addition to a potential fire hazard. I have never seen such smoke of smelled suuch a foul electric odir. I really beleive that these bulbs are a hazard, expecially judging from what I have read about other people's experiences with this exact model. Who makes them, and who's checking to be sure they're safe? They'e UL listed, which makes my confidence in that organization shakey too!

Light burned out, not on dimmer, not on 3-way. Saw smoke coming out of base. The light started making crackling sound. Smoke got worse as if going into flame. Turned off light and removed. Will take all of them out.

I installed these energy saving bulbs all through my house. This particular bulb model failed two times in a very short time. There is no name on the bulb so i cant complain to anyone. About a half hr ago i was glad to be home my house smelled of a horrable odor like burning electric. My bulb was smoking from on of the legs of the coil & turned brown. I wonder if i didn't catch it in time would my house be on fire as we speak...

I purchased these bulbs in June 2007. Two burned out (with a slight smell) within 2 months in rooms that rarely have the lights on.

I can't even determine the correct company to contact regarding the problem. I will not purchase these again and I am concerned regarding the safety issues shared here.

I have placed a dozen or so of these throughout the house over the past year. The other night, my wife & daughter were getting ready to go out for the evening (leaving a couple lights on as usual for the dog), and happened to smell/see smoke coming from a lamp in the living room. They quickly turned it off and called me (since I was on my way out of down). I returned to find the base of the lamp burned. I can only imagine how close we came to having a house fire if nobody had been home at the time.

Seeing others with the same stories, I'm ready to pull all the bulbs throughout the house. The electric savings isn't worth the worry to use this product.

Has anyone had any luck contacting the manufacturer?

Do not use this product.
I had this bulb in the laundry room, in an open fixture, though packing was not obviously labeled as to that requirement (must have been in 1 pt font). Turned it on this morning and light seemed dim. It went out about 1 minute later and then a small flame started coming out of the base were the glass tube enters. Fortunately I was in the room and had not walked out for a couple of minutes or we might have had a house fire.

I have a FEIT Electric BPCE23TM/4 Conserv-Energy 23-watt fluorescent coil bulb in my home office desk lamp. I have used it for four months about six hours per day (720 hours) until it stopped lighting. The packaging states it is a 100-watt replacement, which is contrary to this web site's 75-watt rating for the bulb. Luckily, I have not had the "smoking, burning, browning" problems other reviewers have cited. Nevertheless, I am sorely disappointed in this bulb and the other three that came in the package. I am reticent to contact the company because I do not want to have potentially worse problems with their warranty replacement bulb.

I have 12 of these bulbs in my home, all in Table top lamp. Yesterday when my wife turned on one in our bedroom, it flashed and gave off a burning odor. I immediately turned the lamp off and removed the bulb. It had dark brown burn marks on the right post of the bulb and the base was very hot to the touch. I examined all the other bulbs and found 5 which has evidence of brown burn marks on them. All 12 of these bulbs have been replaced with standard bulbs because we cannot take the chance of a fire.

Has there been any recalls of these bulbs or is there a method to tell which ones are defective?

RE: Conserv-energy BPCE23TM/4... One recent evening I discovered one of my sconce lights was out. The lamp had evidence of heat where the tube protrudes from the ceramic base.
When I removed the sconce,I noticed smoke trails on the paint above it's location. The sconce is open, both top and bottom, no excessive heat can build.

Is there a fire hazard with these units?

smelt something burning in my house could searched all over and couldn't find anything, Then the room had smoke in it and the light went out. I thought I had an electrical fire until I saw the smoke and black os cooming out of the base of the bulb.

I wonder if this was toxic mercury or what it was?

I want to send it back but don't know where to
