This was a great light until my wife found it shooting sparks out of the base of the bulb where the two glass tubes enter the base. I just wanted to warn anyone interested in purchasing this light that there is a risk of sparks. This light is a fire hazard because it could have easily caused my house to burn had we not caught it in time. In addition, be very careful when handling this bulb; it contains Mercury.

I am living in Alaska, but here for vacation. Anyway, Where i live, Michael has some of the bulbs described above in his house. They seem too work fine. Could be he lives off the grid, on a generator, so maybe the power is not as"hot". They have had a few go out, but not with smoke or fire. Those are he ones with the printed warnings on the plastic part printed in black. Those were in the house when they moved in, I think. They have some of the green printing ones, which some of that10 -pack have burned out, but also without incident. Now, they have some i'm not sure offbrand 23 watt=100 watt cfl.

This light was used to replace a regular light bulb about 3 months ago in the bathroom. Today, my roommate was taking a shower and the light bulb began to flicker. A few seconds later the bulb exploded and sprayed broken glass all over the room- including my roommate. He had to rinse off in complete darkness and then wade his way through broken glass. I suggest you do not purchase these bulbs. We will not be.

We have had two of these bulbs burn out and smoke and char the bulb. It is a wonder there wasn't a fire started by this. I will not but these bulbs again. I think they are dangerous.

Model BPCE13T/8. Last night noticed very strong electrical burning odor coming from standard table top lamp with open shade. Immediately unplugged lamp. Energy saver light bulb (model above) from lamp was charred at the base of the bulb. All energy saver bulbs have now been removed and disposed of. We will not use these products again.

I wanted to follow up my review to echo other comments. The bulbs indeed flickered, then failed, and did smell up the area with a burnt electric smell. They were also very hot. I also bought my bulbs at Costco - and never will buy them again. VERY DISAPPOINTING! It really feels like a 'bait and switch.'

Two bulbs replaced within days of each other - with nowhere near a long life - 1,000 hours or less; in a stairway to my basement- installed for less than a year. Unfortunate!

I think a standard 60 watt bulb would last longer.

I have also purchased the Conserv-Energy 15 watt bulbs which I believe from Costco and found them to be very disappointing to say the least. I will never purchase again. Since November of 2008 I have gone thru 8 bulbs out of 43 that I have placed in various rooms thru out my house. One of the bulbs that burnt out was in a rarely used moisture free basement bathroom. 10,000 hours my foot! The bathroom couldn't have seen more than 50 hours. The chinese got over on us on these CFL bulbs, as to my understanding no one else makes these but them. Even if I left the lights on 24/7 it still doesn't add up to 10,000 hrs. In my opinion and experience these bulbs are just plain garbage.

Today while one of these bulbs was on in my desk lamp where I was working, it started flickering. It did this a couple of times and then went out. I waited a minute or so and went to remove the bulb and seared my finger from the heat. I have never seen a bulb that hot even when it was on and working--especially after waiting a minute. Worse still, the bulb began to smoke out of the ceramic base. I immediately turned off the switch but it did not keep the bulb from smelling up my entire house with that electrical burn odor. There was no damage to the lamp but I couldn't help but wonder what might have happened had I not been sitting at my desk when the burn-out began. I have never seen another bulb do this and I can assure you that this company will never have another opportunity for me to see it again with one of theirs. I have removed all of these bulbs from my home. I do not remember where I bought them but without question they are inferior and dangerous. If you have these bulbs burning in your home, I would recommend you remove them.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

I PURCHASED A 4 PACK CONSERV-ENERGY BULBS FROM COSTCO AND I AM NOT SATISFIED WITH THE QUALITY OF THESE BULBS. ALL 4 BULBS HAVE GONE OUT IN A MATTER OF MONTHS. I WISH TO GET REIMBURSED FOR THESE BULBS OR TRY TO SEE WHAT MY OPTIONS ARE AS FAR AS REIMBURSEMENT. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS PRODUCT.

THANK YOU.

My bulbs from Costco are burning out too. Thank you for the contact information. I have emailed Conserv-Energy and I'll be calling Costco. Sad to think this company probably sold a ton of these light bulbs through Costco and took the money and ran. They were thinking a different kind of "green".

I just wrote the Conser-Energy company an E-mail, not just this forem.
I purchassed a 4 pack from Costco about a year ago.
All four have burnt out as of 04 20 2009.
The first went in about 3 mo. the second & third 6 to 7 mo. and the last 9 mo.(which replaced the first bulb).
The standard incandecent bulb lasts around 2 years in my house.

I payed about 2 1/2 times the cost of a standard bulb so I don't see a cost savings using these bulbs (the warrenty on the package is for two years, the advertisement on the package is for 10,000 HRS or approximately 9.1 years of service it dosn't add up.)

When turned on the lights are dimmed somewhat and takes time (20 seconds or so)to come to full power.

If the product lived up to it's 10,000 HR. srevice life it would be cost efective, that being said it just dosn't even come close.

You all should E-mail the company a complaint as I have. Send to > admin@theenergysaverstore.com

Also call your local Costco to register a complaint @ 1.800.220.6000

I talked with Costco and they will forward your complaint to the local buyer in your area. Costco also recomended to take back any bulbs remaining in your 4 or 10 pack cartons.

At best the energy used (13W) may have payed for the cost of the bulb even with the short life but I expected 8 years service not 8 months.

CFL bulbs purchassed from Home Depot & Lows have out preformed (time-wise)the Costco Conserv-Energy bulbs but the Wattage is higher.

I hope this review has helped.

P.S. I requested 4 replacement bulbs from Conserve-Energy let's see what they do about it.

I did not realize how hazadous these CFL bulbs were/are. I installed them 2-3 years ago and they did last that long. However, this was the third one that burned and smell. It was good that we were around when it happened. Immediate power off took care of the electrical shortage.
Conserv-Energy should recall them all and Costco should not carry them any more.
This fire hazadous condition outweighs the energy conserved.

Would agree with the other negative comments - though ours lasted longer. Last week had one burning and smoking while on. Good thing we didn't leave the light on in the basement and my wife was around to turn it off! We got ours at Costco too. Maybe their off the market already? Should be.

I turned on the light; a few moments later, I heard a crackling sound, and flames over a foot long shot out of the bulb and caught the shade on fire. Had I gone into another room after turning on the light, my house might have burned down. This burning bulb caused the outlet to malfunction afterwards, and I had to hire an electrician. Bad, bad, bad and very dangerous. My bedside table lamp makes mysterious sparking noises. Now I am certain the noise is due to a faulty bulb which may catch fire as well if not thrown away immediately.

I installed a BPCE13T/8 IN 02/08; REPLACED IT 08/08. That lasted a whole 7 months. The perfectly good regular bulb that I replaced with this energy saver lasted three years. It cost 1/3 as much as the energy saver, that was a real deal. Green sucks.

we moved in 9 months ago and replaced all 6 lights in our kitchen, 3 have burned out already...box says average life 7,000 hours, we've lived here 9 months x 30 days = ~270 days 7,000/270 = 25.92 hours per day...so our lights would have to have been on for more that 25 hours a day which is probably possible if you use the math that this company uses

My wife and I just had a Conserv-Energy BPCE13T/8 compact fluorescent light bulb burn out and then subsequently begin to smoke and spark. I quickly turned off the light switch and then removed the bulb with a towel. The base of the bulb was extremely hot and the plastic base is discolored around the glass bulbs. I am sure if we had not been home this light bulb would have caught on fire. I am going to replace any others I find in my house immediately.

I have been happy with this product's performance. A major concern I have that has been mentioned by a couple of previous reviewers, is the fact I have had two bulbs burn out and in the process, created a burning smell and a hole actually is burned into the base of the bulb. We have been home both times this occured to quickly turn off the fixtures. What happens if we aren't at home and it causes a house fire? I have emailed the company and am awaiting their response.

I bought a 4-pack of these at Costco and not a single one has lasted even as long as a regular light bulb. They also barely come on when you first turn them on and take a fair amount of time to warm up to full energy. Even then, they do not provide as much light as regular bulbs. A total waste of money, and far lower quality than any other light bulb I've ever used.

I bought an 8-pack of these bulbs at Costco. Out of 8 bulbs only 2 have lasted longer than a month. Tried returning the first one that burned out to Conserv-Energy, and they kept emailing me questions as if I was in the wrong (No, it was not on a dimmer. No, it was not used outside. No it was not used in a 3-way fixture). They wanted me to mail them the bad bulb, which cost me money, and I finally received a replacement. It also burned out after several weeks.

In short, these bulbs may conserve electricity, but I feel they are deceptively marketed as they do not last 10,000 hours and the company is difficult to deal with. I'm also thinking that it's possible that since they don't last, they're doing more HARM than good for the environment, since these bulbs take more energy to make than an incandescent bulb and don't last as long, plus they risk adding mercury to the landfills.

I will try buying compact fluorescents again, but I will NEVER BUY FROM CONSERV-ENERGY.

something burning just before we noticed them being out. Up till now I
was satisfied with the way that they worked. Now I'm not sure if I shouldn't replace all of them before we have a fire.

I used BPCE13T/8 by Conserv-Energy. I had a bunch of them and they were ok. However they all started to died after ~18 months. I had them in my living room and kitchen and dining room. So they normal household use.
I was hoping to last at least 3-4 years though based on the warrenty of 7 years.
