Group Description:

The Marlboro Junior High is studying the science of sustainability with a focus on energy and physical sciences. Rather than start with topics from a textbook, the class decided to work on real projects they would like to accomplish. The topics for classes are coming from this practical approach—what do we need to know to get the job done?

One of our projects is to convince and enable Marlboro households to convert their lighting from incandescent to compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). The class set a goal of converting 50% of the town’s existing incandescent lighting. We started with our own room. After calculating the classroom’s electricity load, we made changes to the lighting that will save us 247 kWh per month—at $.12/kWh, that’s a savings of almost $30/mo.

We have started a wiki with these and other statistics.
See JH Classroom Electricity Load page and the Survey of Bulbs in our Households. In an initial survey of 20 households we found out that the median number of bulbs per house is 40, with 29% of those being CFLs.

Thanks to One Billion Bulbs for this great opportunity to take part in a larger project.

Note from Energy Trek:

For members and viewers of this group, the spirit of the Energy "Trek" means:

  • We focus on any positive step people take. Most people are energy abusers in some way (cars, TV's, appliances, etc), and Energy Trek wants to encourage everyone to start taking steps to save energy - no matter the size - without being concerned of being criticized for being hypocritical or taking just token steps.
  • Energy Trek and One Billion Bulbs comments and usage should not be political in nature. We want to bring people together to save energy regardless of their ideology or motivation - environment/global warming, national security/energy independence, saving money, convenience, or some combination thereof. As a matter of fact, we'd like you to encourage others you know, whatever their political persuasion, to help out.
